With a wealth of experience and understanding of corporate governance, business principles and organisational dynamics, Mike has developed a clearly defined, yet flexible, coaching approach that achieves results through empathetic listening and asking probing questions that help identify underlying, attitudinal/behavioural patterns.
His professional focus is on emotional and conversational intelligence, effective relationship building, establishing trust and setting expectations by defining the scope of the coaching engagement model. Mike enjoys a collaborative style of coaching where he works closely with his clients and their HR staff, as well as line management, if applicable.
Mike utilises a number of coaching techniques and accredited instruments. For example: the practical application of mBIT coaching for transformational change; applying style flexing techniques when coaching for mastery in communication, effective negotiation and conflict resolution; guiding and mentoring the client through a process of self-enquiry or a change leadership challenge.
His preference is face to face coaching – usually in a one or two hour session – in a quiet location away from normal business activities; however, he also has a number of clients who, due to their location, are coached remotely using the phone, Zoom, Skype or Facetime. Mike is an acknowledged subject-matter-expert in a range of disciplines, through study and an extensive corporate management career. He has been a change leadership mentor, with proven success across a diverse global working environment since the mid-1980s, dealing with headstrong, stubborn, unwilling to engage and difficult people. However, twenty years ago, he began business coaching with a key focus on effective and masterly communication, conflict resolution and leadership development.
He enjoyed a rewarding corporate career through technical, operational, sales, marketing, senior, divisional and executive management roles within three blue chip companies, based in Australia and overseas, (civil construction, extractive and explosives industries) - with a strong focus on profitability, cost management, strategic direction, value-adding, innovation, procedural excellence and developing highly motivated and committed teams with a common purpose.
One of those organisations was ICI Australia Operations Pty Ltd (now Orica Limited) where, between 1988 and 1998, Mike’s key accountability was to lead the profitable growth and strategic direction of the company’s Australian Quarry & Construction Business Unit whilst ensuring the safe and environmentally effective production of bulk explosives and the provision of blast management services. (This developed into a global ‘strategic-influencing’ role from mid-1995).
For the past twenty years Mike’s focus, whilst trading as Strategically Yours, has been to acquire the qualifications and skills to practice as a professional certified coach (PCC) and leadership course facilitator (In the latter case, he is recognised as an experienced and engaging workshop facilitator in the delivery of leadership, business, frontline, project, risk management, lean process, safety and hazard identification, sales and technical programs). Mike has experience of working in/delivering to a variety of industries including Extractive, Explosives, Construction Materials, Civil Engineering, Local Government, Hospitality and Executive Search Recruitment.
